We are honored to recognize a long-time resident of Potter Valley and a superior community member as this year’s
2011 Grand Marshall. Maggie Shepard was born in Taft, California. She grew up in Paso Robles, CA and attended
High School there. After graduation she enrolled in college at Cal Poly, in San Luis Obispo majoring in Home
Economics. This was the first class of women in a previously all boys college. It was at college that Maggie met Bud
Shepard, who was also attending school. They were married soon after college graduation in 1958.
The couple moved a lot while Bud worked as a Real Estate and Ag Appraiser for Bank of America starting in San
Francisco then to San Luis Obispo, and Ukiah. Bud and Maggie decided that they wanted to live in a more country
setting and bought 50 acres of the old “Webb Ranch” on West Road, South of the Potter Valley Cemetery. The
farm had 40 acres of pears and Bud and Maggie farmed those for two years. They soon realized that farming pears
was a full-time job so they sold the pears and kept their picturesque house on the hill. Bud and Maggie have three
sons, Steve, Todd and Jim. Steve and his wife Connie (Duman) live in Potter Valley and have two children, Cody
and Samantha. Todd and his wife Janine live in Sandpoint, Idaho and have three girls, Ashley, Amy and Abby. Jim
lives in Utah. Maggie was active in her boy’s schools both in Potter Valley and Ukiah serving as PTA President and
was a Cub Scout leader. In the mid-1970’s Maggi opened a Day-Care center in her home serving working moms.
Maggie enjoyed working and playing with hundreds of Potter’s young people and still keeps in contact with many of
them today. In 1990 she retired to enjoy RV travel with Bud and friends.
In 1997, after the Raina Shirley tragedy, the community came together to create a safe place for young people and
teens to hang out. The Potter Valley Youth and Community Center was the result. The first director of the Center
was her daughter-in-law, Coni and the need then was for snacks and incidentals. That need spawned the idea of
producing a noon meal for the community with proceeds going to the Youth Center. The first Community Lunch was
in January of 1998 and served 14 people at that meal. For the next 13 years the monthly meals served 40 to 60
people. Since then the Community Lunch has donated $15,629.25 to the Youth Center. This could not have been
done without lots of help from people willing to donate their time to put on the monthly lunch. Maggie wishes to
thank Norma Dunsing, Val Moore, Debbie Rensen, Ted and Jessica Kimball, Kim Lyly, Mary Ann Kaye, Mary
Thornton, Lillian Kimmel, the Potter Valley School classes who have served the meals and entertained the lunch
attendees, and especially her husband Bud who has been the head dishwasher from the start.
Maggie is a long-time member of the Potter Valley Community United Methodist Church, a member of the Potter
Valley Garden Club, and the Mendocino Community Foundation. She enjoys traveling, gardening, spending time
with family and friends and watching her grandkids grow.
Maggie is a warm and caring individual with a soft-spot for children. In everything she does, the heart of what she
does is directly related to helping the children and youth of Potter Valley. Whether raising money for the Youth
Center, being a Sunday school teacher and helping at Vacation Bible School at church or cooking breakfast for kids
on a Friday morning before school, Maggie is a person who is always there when you need her, ready to roll up her
sleeves and get-to-work. When Maggie sees a need for something, she is the first to look for a solution. Thank you
Maggie for all you have done in our small community and for all you continue to do. You are a true community
leader.
